The Rice Engineering Design Experience (REDE) comprises several programs to inform non-engineers about engineering: the engineering design and problem solving process, the engineering profession and practice, and educational routes into technical and engineering careers. Our focus is not on providing specific engineering technical content, but on developing the skills to think like an engineer, a habit of mind that is useful in many domains. We have just finished a three-year Texas Teacher Quality grant to provide professional development for high school science teachers, and we are just beginning a new grant that focuses on middle school science teachers. We also have an NSF grant to develop a minor in engineering topics for non-engineering college undergraduates, to improve technological literacy and provide problem solving skills in other careers.
